Purple neon light: meaning, shades & buying guide

Quick answer: purple neon light

  • Colour. Purple neon light isn’t one wavelength. It’s a mix of red and blue light, so it reads differently depending on how much of each is in the mix.
  • Hex code. “Neon purple” has no standard value. The brightest purple a screen can show is electric purple, #BF00FF (RGB 191, 0, 255). color-name.com lists #B026FF as “Neon Purple”. All codes below.
  • Shades. Violet (deep, blue-leaning), lavender (soft, pale), magenta (pink-leaning), deep plum, and UV purple (blacklight effect).
  • Meaning. Purple has carried associations with royalty, luxury and creativity for centuries, which is why it’s a common choice for high-end retail, bedrooms and nightlife spaces.
  • How it’s made. Glass neon gets its violet glow from pure argon gas, or from a phosphor coating inside the tube. LED neon uses purple LED chips instead of gas.

What are purple neon signs

Purple neon signs are illuminated signs, made either from glass neon tubing or flexible LED neon, that glow purple or violet. They’re used for storefronts, bars, bedrooms, weddings and events, and as decorative wall pieces.

How the colour is made

Real neon gas only glows reddish-orange. Other colours come from a different gas or a coated tube. Pure argon gas produces a lilac-violet glow on its own. An argon and mercury mix gives off ultraviolet light, and a phosphor coating inside the tube turns that into its own colour, which is how makers combine gases and coatings to get other shades (Wikipedia: Argon; Wikipedia: Neon sign).

Most purple signs sold today are LED neon flex rather than glass. LED neon uses a flexible silicone tube with purple LED chips inside instead of gas, so there’s no glass to break and no high-voltage transformer needed to strike an arc.

Types of purple neon signs

  • Script fonts for names, quotes or a single word
  • Logo signs for a shop or brand
  • Decorative shapes such as hearts, stars or outlines

Meaning of purple neon color

Purple is a non-spectral colour. It doesn’t have its own wavelength the way violet does; it’s what you get from mixing red and blue light in different proportions (Wikipedia: Purple).

That blend is part of why purple reads as creative or a little mysterious. It sits visually between two other colours rather than being its own point on the spectrum.

Historically, purple has been tied to status and wealth. Tyrian purple dye, made from sea snails, was so expensive in antiquity that it became the colour of Roman magistrates and later Byzantine emperors. That history is why purple still reads as royal, luxurious or high-end today, and why brands in beauty, fashion and hospitality reach for it.

Purple neon sign shade variations

Not all purple neon light looks the same. The shade changes the mood.

Violet

Deep, blue-leaning purple. Reads as regal and a little formal. Common in upscale bars, boutiques and home offices, paired with gold accents or dark wood.

Lavender

Soft, pale purple with grey undertones. Calming rather than intense. Common in bedrooms, nurseries and spa spaces, paired with white or cream.

Magenta

A bright purple-pink. Energetic and bold, common in gaming rooms, nightclubs and retail displays, paired with electric blue or black.

Deep plum

A dark, wine-leaning purple. Intimate rather than loud, common in wine bars and lounges.

UV purple

The classic blacklight look: bright purple that makes white fabric and fluorescent materials glow under it. Common in clubs, gaming setups and themed parties.

Neon purple colour codes (hex and RGB)

There is no official “neon purple”. The CSS colour list does not define one, and references disagree: color-name.com gives #B026FF, while Wikipedia’s alphabetical list of colours shows #9457EB. A useful reference point is electric purple, which Wikipedia describes as the purest and brightest purple a computer screen can display. Each hex code below is the value published by the source in its row; the RGB values are converted from the hex code.

Two things to know before you use these:

  • UV purple has no true screen value. Ultraviolet light sits below about 380 nm, the edge of the typical visible range (Wikipedia: Visible spectrum), and even pure spectral violet is outside the colours an RGB screen can show (Wikipedia: Shades of violet), so a screen can only suggest the blacklight look. Pantone’s “Ultra Violet” (18-3838 TPX) is a named Pantone colour, not ultraviolet light (Wikipedia: Shades of violet).
  • A screen swatch is not the lit tube. If you sell purple neon online, pick the hex value for each colour option from your LED supplier’s colour sample, not from the brightest value in this table, so the shade a customer chooses on screen is close to the sign they receive.

Selling purple neon signs from your sign shop

Who buys purple neon signs

Purple sells across a wide range of buyers. Common segments: bars and restaurants adding a feature wall or logo sign, wedding and event hire businesses providing signs for a night, and home decor and gifting customers ordering a personalised sign for a bedroom or living room. Purple’s luxury and creative associations also make it a repeat choice for beauty, fashion and wellness brands.

Pricing and selling it online

Instead of quoting each purple neon sign by email, a live customiser lets a shopper type their text, pick a font, choose a purple shade, set a size and a backboard, and see a design preview and price update as they go. You set the rates. The customiser runs your pricing rules against what the customer picks. Sign Customiser is built for this: a sign shop configures fonts, tube colours, backboard shapes and pricing once, and customers design and order from the shop’s own website.

A worked pricing example

Neon signs are commonly priced by tube length rather than a flat fee, using the formula (tube length in cm × price per cm) + base price. The numbers below are illustrative only. You set your own rates in the admin.

DesignTube lengthPrice per cm (example rate)Base price (example rate)Illustrative total
Small script sign30 cm$2.50$35$110
Medium script sign60 cm$2.50$35$185

A colour or option selection, such as an RGB upgrade, can add a further base price or a price multiplier on top of that total. You control what each selection costs.

Production and material notes

Purple neon signs are made in two main ways. LED flex uses a flexible tube with LED chips. Glass neon uses gas-filled glass tubing shaped and sealed by a neon bender. LED flex is lighter and less fragile than glass tubing, which makes it easier to ship.

Sign Customiser attaches production-ready SVG cut paths to every order, along with tube colour, electrical requirements and dimmer notes, so your production team or supplier gets order-ready details without a back-and-forth. Backboard colour, material and texture are configurable per customiser.

For most home and business signs, LED neon is the more practical choice. Glass neon still has a place for vintage-style signage or when an exact traditional glow is the goal.

FAQs about purple neon signs

What does a purple neon sign mean?

Purple has long been tied to royalty, luxury and creativity, so a purple neon sign tends to read as upscale, artistic or a little mysterious, depending on the shade and where it’s used.

What is the hex code for neon purple?

There is no standard one. The brightest purple a screen can display is electric purple, #BF00FF (RGB 191, 0, 255). color-name.com gives #B026FF for “neon purple”. For a softer neon look, floral lavender is #B57EDC and plum is #8E4585.

Is violet neon the same as purple neon?

Not quite. Violet is a single wavelength at the edge of the visible spectrum. Purple is a blend of red and blue light with no wavelength of its own. In neon and LED signage, “violet” usually refers to the deepest, bluest end of the purple range.

What makes a neon sign glow purple?

Glass neon tubes glow violet from pure argon gas, or take their colour from a phosphor coating inside the tube. LED neon signs use purple LED chips instead of gas.

Is purple a warm or cool colour?

It depends on the shade. Blue-leaning shades like violet read as cool. Pink-leaning shades like magenta read as warm.

How much does a custom purple neon sign cost?

It depends on the size, tube length and options you choose, and every shop sets its own rates. The most accurate way to check is to build the design in a live customiser and see the price update as you go, such as the free neon sign maker.
