Enable AI Sign Designer on an existing customiser, configure its fallback form and pricing, then test the customer experience.

Last updated:

Enable AI Sign Designer on an existing customiser. Customers can then upload artwork and change it into a sign. They can configure and buy the sign.

Before you start

Make sure that:

  • Your customiser uses a supported sign type: Neon, Channel Letter (acrylic or metal), or Metal Cut-Out.

  • It uses a supported pricing model. Neon and Channel Letter customisers can use Frame Fit or Advanced Letter (Material Length) pricing. Metal Cut-Out customisers use Frame Fit pricing. Simple Letter (Fixed Width) pricing is not supported.

  • You have a Custom Design form with a File Upload field and a required Email field. If you do not, Step 4 shows what to do.

  • Your Store has at least one AI credit before you test the customer experience. Each successful conversion uses one credit.

For more information about compatible customisers, credits, file formats, and generated files, read the AI Sign Designer Guide.

Step 1: Open the customiser

  1. Open the Sign Customiser admin.

  2. Select Customisers.

  3. Find the customiser you want to change.

  4. Select its name.

Step 2: Open Custom Designs

Under Core Setup, select Custom Designs.

You can also start on the Overview page of the customiser. While AI Sign Designer is off, the Get more from this customiser card can show AI Sign Designer. Select Set up to open the Custom Design page.

The Get more from this customiser card on the Overview page, with the AI Sign Designer tile, its Off badge and the Set up button.

Step 3: Select AI Sign Designer

Under Custom designs, select AI Sign Designer (recommended).

The Custom designs card with AI Sign Designer (recommended) selected

The AI Sign Designer (recommended) option is grey when it is not available. The text under the option gives the reason:

  • “Your plan does not include AI Sign Designer.” Select Upgrade your plan.

  • “This pricing model does not support AI Sign Designer. Use a Frame Fit or Material Length customiser.” Use a customiser with Frame Fit or Material Length pricing.

If the option does not show, your sign type does not support AI Sign Designer. Check the sign types in “Before you start”.

When you select AI Sign Designer (recommended), the Set up AI Sign Designer card shows below. Continue to Step 4. To read more about the option, select About AI Sign Designer, under the list.

Step 4: Check or create the fallback form

The fallback form lets customers send you their artwork. It shows when AI Sign Designer cannot make a design from the artwork. It also shows when your Store has no credits.

In the Set up AI Sign Designer card, look at the Fallback form line.

  • If the line says “When AI Sign Designer cannot make a design, customers send you their image with this form.”, the form is ready. Go to Step 5.

  • If no form is eligible, select Create a fallback form. The page creates a form named AI Sign Designer Form and selects it. The form has these fields: Email, First Name, Last Name, Phone, Project Description and Upload Your Logo.

  • If you have other forms, select Edit my forms. Choose a form that has a required Email field and a File Upload field.

To build your own form instead, follow these steps.

  1. On the Forms page, select Add New Form. If you already have forms, select Add Form.

  2. Under Form Quote Type, keep Custom designs selected.

  3. In Label, enter a name, such as Custom Design Request.

  4. Under Fields, select Add new field.

  5. Select File Upload.

  6. In Label text, enter a label for the field, such as Upload your design.

  7. Select Required Field. We recommend this setting.

  8. Select Done.

  9. Keep the Email field in the form. New forms include it. It must stay required.

  10. In Receiver Email, enter an email address. If you leave it empty, the Store’s default email address is used.

  11. Choose what happens After submission.

  12. Select Save.

Go back to Core Setup. Then select Custom Designs.

When a customer uses this form, the request shows under Quotes. Form Quote Type sets where it shows:

  • Custom designs requests show as Form submissions.

  • Quote Mode requests show as Quote requests.

Keep Custom designs for the fallback form.

For more form settings, read Custom Design Forms.

Step 5: Complete the AI Sign Designer settings

The Set up AI Sign Designer card shows how many items are ready: “1 of 3 ready”, “2 of 3 ready”, or “3 of 3 ready. Customers can use AI Sign Designer.” Each item has a green tick when it is ready. An item with a red ! needs action.

The Set up AI Sign Designer card showing 1 of 3 ready

Complete each item that has a red !.

  1. AI credits. If the line says “Your Store has 0 AI credits. Customers cannot see AI Sign Designer until you get more credits.”, select Get AI credits. When the line shows your balance, such as “120 AI credits”, the item is ready.

  2. Pricing model. Select a pricing model in the Pricing model field. The message tells you which type to select:

    • “Select a pricing model.” (Frame Fit customiser)

    • “Select a Material Length pricing model.” (Material Length customiser)

    • “Select a font tier pricing model.”

A pricing model’s name, such as “Flat parcel pricing”, does not tell you its type. On a Material Length customiser, select a pricing model with the Material Length badge.

  3. Fallback form. Select a form in the Fallback form field. The form must have a required Email field and a File Upload field. If the form has “(cannot use)” after its name, it lacks a field. The message says which field is missing:

    • “This form needs a File Upload field.”

    • “This form needs a required Email field.”

    • “This form needs a required Email field and a File Upload field.”

If the option shows Deleted form, the form no longer exists. Select a different form.

When all three items are ready, the card shows “3 of 3 ready. Customers can use AI Sign Designer.”

The Set up AI Sign Designer card showing 3 of 3 ready on a Frame Fit customiser

For an Advanced Letter (Material Length) customiser, find Sign Dimensions. Then:

  1. Set the Default width and Default height. These are the start dimensions for an uploaded design.

  2. Set the Minimum height. Use the smallest height that your production method can make.

For a Frame Fit customiser, the dimension settings do not show.

Below the set-up card:

  • Keep Send designs that cannot be made automatically to the fallback form selected. It is on by default.

  • Read the customer text under Language. Change it if necessary.

If you clear Send designs that cannot be made automatically to the fallback form, designs that AI Sign Designer refuses do not go to your form. Customers can try again or use another image.

Changes apply only after you select Save.

Step 6: Decide whether to auto-process form uploads

Below the set-up card, select Auto-process uploaded images with AI only if you want AI Sign Designer to process files from your forms automatically.

Each successfully processed file uses one credit. If you want to handle form submissions yourself, leave the setting off.

Step 7: Save and test

  1. Select Save.

  2. Select Preview at the top of the page. A preview window opens with Desktop and Mobile views.

  3. Find the upload area. It shows Upload your logo and Drop an image here or tap to browse.

  4. If the customiser also has a Text editor, select the Custom tab first.

  5. Upload a test image.

  6. Make sure that the generated design shows in the customiser and that you can configure it.

A successful test uses one AI credit. A failed conversion does not use a credit.

If something is missing

  • The AI Sign Designer (recommended) option does not show: Your sign type does not support AI Sign Designer. Check the sign types in “Before you start”.

  • The AI Sign Designer (recommended) option is grey: Read the text under the option. “Your plan does not include AI Sign Designer.” means that you must select Upgrade your plan. “This pricing model does not support AI Sign Designer.” means that you must use a customiser with Frame Fit or Material Length pricing.

  • The Set up AI Sign Designer card shows 1 of 3 ready or 2 of 3 ready: Complete each item that has a red !. See Step 5.

  • Your fallback form is not in the list, or it shows “(cannot use)”: Edit the form. Make sure that it has a required Email field and a File Upload field.

  • Customers see the fallback form instead of AI Sign Designer: Check your AI credit balance. The fallback form also shows when AI Sign Designer cannot make a design from the uploaded file. If your balance is more than zero and customers see only the form, contact support.
