Displaying the measurement units in the admin of Sign Customiser

Set the units for your Store

Your Store has two admin unit settings: Measurement Unit for lengths and Weight Unit for weights. Check these Store settings first for every length, weight, divisor and related rate in the merchant admin. You can set the two units separately.

In the Universal admin, open Your Store → Store Settings → Admin Settings. You can open https://web.signcustomiser.com/app/settings/store directly.

In the Shopify-embedded admin, open the Sign Customiser app from your Shopify admin. Then open Home → Menu → Tools & Settings → Store Settings → Admin Settings.

The Admin Settings section of Store Configuration with the Measurement Unit and Weight Unit selects and the Review changes button

Select Centimetres or Inches under Measurement Unit. Select Kilograms or Pounds under Weight Unit. Select Review changes. Read the Change the Store units dialogue. Select Change units.

Which units do the settings control?

Measurement Unit sets the unit for sign sizes, parcel dimensions, packaging allowances and length-based rates in the merchant admin. Choose centimetres (cm) or inches (in).

Weight Unit sets the unit for weight-based rates. Choose kilograms (kg) or pounds (lb).

Together, the two settings select the unit for a new volumetric divisor. The divisor is parcel volume for each unit of weight:

The 305 in³/kg value is calculated from the metric suggestion. It is not a carrier quote. Use the divisor that your shipping carrier gives you.

An existing divisor can keep its entered number and unit after you change Store settings. Read the full unit beside that divisor before you edit it.

What happens after I save a value?

Open Store Settings. Read How the app stores your units. This text is in the Store Settings section, above Admin Settings.

The Store Settings section of Store Configuration with the How the app stores your units text

The text says that new inch sizes entered in the merchant admin are saved in inches. It also says that new pound weight rates are saved in pounds. The merchant admin saves the value that you enter, in your Store unit, with the exact number that you typed.

If your Store uses cm and kg, enter a size of 31 cm. After you save and reload, the merchant admin shows 31 cm. Weight-based rates show per kg.

If your Store uses in and lb, enter a size of 31 in. After you save and reload, the merchant admin shows the size in inches. A weight-based rate that you enter per lb shows per lb.

For a mixed Store, check each setting separately. A centimetre-and-pound Store uses cm for lengths and lb for weights. A new divisor then uses cm³/lb. An inch-and-kilogram Store uses in and kg. A new divisor then uses in³/kg.

What does the converted marker mean?

In a Store that uses inches or pounds, a value can come from centimetres or kilograms. For example, you enter a size in centimetres. Then you change the Store to inches. The merchant admin shows that size in inches. The saved centimetre value does not change.

In a Store that uses inches or pounds, a converted marker shows next to a value that you entered in centimetres or kilograms. A value that you entered in the Store unit shows no marker.

To keep a value in your Store unit, change the number and save it. If you enter the same number, the saved value does not change.

How do I change the Store units?

Select the new units. Then select Review changes. Sign Customiser examines your saved values. It does not change them at this step. The Change the Store units dialogue shows:

  • the length unit and the weight unit, before and after the change

  • how many values will show as converted

  • up to five Examples, with the value Now and After the change

The Change the Store units dialogue with example values in centimetres now and in inches after the change

Sign Customiser does not change saved values when you change units. Values that were entered in the other unit show as converted. If you change back to the previous units, each value that you did not edit shows as before.

The dialogue can also say that rows you save after the switch store sizes or weight rates in the new unit. A line shows for each unit that changes.

Before you select Change units, save or discard unsaved customiser changes for this Store in all admin tabs of your browser. You cannot select Change units while a customiser form for this Store has unsaved changes in any tab of this browser.

What does the customer see?

The customer customiser has a separate setting for displayed lengths. In the merchant admin, open the customiser and select General Settings. Under General Style Settings, set Measurement Unit to Centimeters, Inches or Both Centimeters and Inches. Changing the Store’s admin Measurement Unit does not change this setting in existing customisers. A new blank customiser starts with the Store Measurement Unit as its setting.

General Settings in the customiser admin with the Measurement Unit select under General Style Settings

Assume that you entered a preset size in inches. The customiser Measurement Unit is Inches or Both Centimeters and Inches, and Show/hide Measurements is not Do not show measurements. The customer customiser then shows that inch value when the shopper reviews the design. For other sizes, it calculates the inch value from the stored centimetres. The two values can differ by a small amount.

This does not apply to custom sizes, sizes with a border margin, or Advanced Letter and Frame Fit customisers.

The customer price breakdown and per-area option prices use the Store Measurement Unit. They change when you change the Store unit. The price breakdown shows the divisor with its full unit. An existing divisor can keep its authored unit, so read that label if you change Store settings.

What unit goes to Shopify?

Select Add weight to product instead of calculating price in volumetric pricing. Sign Customiser then sends the calculated weight to a generated Shopify product. A Store that uses kilograms sends kilograms to Shopify. A Store that uses pounds sends pounds. Check Weight sent to Shopify on the generated product details. It shows the sent value and unit.

FAQ

Can I use inches with kilograms? Yes. Set Measurement Unit to Inches and Weight Unit to Kilograms. New volumetric pricing suggests 305 in³/kg as a starting divisor.

Does changing Store units change the measurements that customers see? Not on the visualiser or the review screen. These follow the customiser’s Measurement Unit under General Settings, which a Store unit change does not alter. The customer price breakdown and per-area option prices use the Store Measurement Unit, so they change after a Store unit change. To rename a size, select it on the Sizes page, then change its Label under Size Details.

Does changing Store units change my saved values? No. Values from the other unit show as converted. If you change back to the previous units, each value that you did not edit shows as before.

What unit does Shopify receive from my Store? Shopify receives the weight in your Store Weight Unit: kilograms from a Store that uses kilograms, and pounds from a Store that uses pounds. The weight always matches its unit. Check Weight sent to Shopify on the product details.

Why does an existing divisor have a different unit from my Store settings? It keeps its entered unit. Read the full unit beside the number before you edit it.

Which divisor should I enter? Use the divisor that your shipping carrier gives you for your service and unit pair.
