Each time a customer adds a custom sign to the cart, our app creates the sign as a “product” in your Shopify admin. Shopify needs this product to handle and sell the sign. You can hide these customised products from the pages where customers browse your store.

There are two ways to hide them. Use only one of them.

  • Option 1 (recommended): Unlist your custom sign products. One setting in Sign Customiser hides each new custom sign from collection pages, search results and product recommendations in Shopify. A third-party search or recommendation app that does not support the Unlisted status can still show these products, so check any such app.

  • Option 2: Keep the products “Active” and hide them with your Shopify storefront settings. This option has several steps in Shopify.

This option is the simplest. Change your default product status to “Unlisted” one time in Sign Customiser. Then each new custom sign product is hidden from Shopify collection pages, search results and product recommendations automatically. You do not need to change collections or your theme.

Shopify also has the product statuses Draft and Archived. This article uses Active and Unlisted:

  • Active - The product is ready to be sold.

  • Unlisted - Customers can buy the product with its direct link, but it does not show in collection pages, search results or product recommendations on your store.

Steps:

  1. Log in to your Sign Customiser account.

  2. On the home page, click Tools & Settings. Then click Integrations and Webhooks. In the web admin at web.signcustomiser.com, you can also click Integrations in the Integrate menu.

The Tools & Settings page in the Sign Customiser admin, with the Integrations and Webhooks card in the grid of settings cards

  3. Click View Details on your Shopify integration.

  4. Click Edit Integration.

  5. Change Default Product Status to Unlisted.

  6. Click Update.

From now on, Sign Customiser creates each new custom sign product as Unlisted. The product does not show in collection pages, search results or product recommendations on your store. Customers can still open it with its direct link. The setting applies to new products only. A third-party search or recommendation app that does not support the Unlisted status can still show the product. You do not need to do Option 2.

Option 2: Keep Products Active and Hide Them via Shopify Settings

Many smart collections can delay products in collections

The rules below use the sign-customiser-generated tag. This tag stays on the product. Shopify says that a large number of smart collections can delay products that show in collections on your storefront. If a generated product must never show in catalogue pages, use the recommended Unlisted status.

Use this option if you want to keep your custom sign products “Active”.

The products stay Active in your catalogue. You must hide them in several places. Do one or more of the following tasks, as necessary for your store.

Create a Custom “All” Collection

Shopify creates a catalogue page at /collections/all. It lists the visible products in your store. Shopify says that you can create a collection with the title “All” to control the order in which products show on this page. The URL handle of this collection must be all. Shopify also documents that you can add a condition to this collection to hide products from the page. Here you add a condition that leaves out custom sign products.

Steps:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click Add collection.

  3. Enter the title “All”.

  4. In the Collection type section, choose Smart.

  5. Set the collection to match all conditions. Then set the following:

    • First dropdown: select Tag.

    • Second dropdown: select does not include.

    • Third field: enter sign-customiser-generated.

  6. In the Search engine listing section:

    • Click the pencil icon to edit.

    • Make sure the URL handle is: all

  7. Click Save.

This collection contains only the products that match its conditions. A product with the sign-customiser-generated tag does not match, so this collection does not contain signs that have the tag. Shopify documents that a condition on this collection hides products from the catalogue page (its example hides products that are out of stock). So the catalogue page does not list signs that have the tag. Sign Customiser began to add this tag to new signs in early August 2026. Signs that it created before then do not have the tag, so this collection can still contain them.

Exclude Custom Signs from Your Other Collections

Custom sign products can also show in other collections when they match the collection conditions. For example, a collection can contain products that cost less than $200. Custom sign products have their own price, so they can match this condition and join this collection. Add a condition to exclude them.

Steps:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Select the Collection to edit.

  3. Make sure the collection matches all conditions.

  4. Click Add another condition, then set the following:

    • First dropdown: select Tag.

    • Second dropdown: select does not include.

    • Third field: enter sign-customiser-generated.

Do these steps for each collection that includes custom signs. The tag is on every sign that Sign Customiser created from early August 2026, in every category. Older signs do not have the tag. Each generated sign also has a product type, for example Custom Neon. To exclude only one type, add a condition on the type of product, with the second dropdown set to is not equal to and that type in the third field. For signs that Sign Customiser created from early August 2026, use it instead of the tag condition. Signs that it created before then all have the type Custom Neon, so no type condition separates them.

Collections that Sign Customiser manages: On Shopify plans other than Starter and Retail, Sign Customiser creates a collection named Sign Customiser Products. It also creates one collection for each customiser. The title of that collection is the customiser name. Sign Customiser adds each generated sign to these collections when it creates the product. These collections have no rules. The tag condition does not apply to them. The steps above do not remove signs from them. Do not delete these collections, because a Shopify discount can use them. For more information, see Create Shopify discounts for custom sign products.

Exclude from Product Recommendations

Some Shopify themes show recommended or related products on product pages. Shopify can choose related products from your store by itself.

You can use an app, such as Shopify Search & Discovery, to choose the recommended and related products yourself. Then Shopify shows the products that you choose. You can also hide the recommendations that Shopify generates by itself (step 7).

Steps:

  1. Install the Shopify Search & Discovery app from the Shopify App Store.

  2. In your Shopify admin, go to Apps > Search & Discovery.

  3. In Search & Discovery, open the product recommendations page. The page shows a list of your products with their complementary and related products.

  4. Click Add recommendations. Then select the product that shows custom signs as recommended or related products.

  5. In Complementary products, search for products that are not custom signs. Add them.

  6. In Related products, search for products that are not custom signs. Add them.

  7. Select the option that hides the auto-generated recommendations for the product.

  8. Click Save.

  9. Do these steps again for each other product that shows custom signs as recommendations.

You must set this option for each product separately. Shopify hides its own recommendations only for the products that have this option.
