Autogenerate SKU for sign products in Shopify?

Our app creates a new product in Shopify for each custom sign that a customer adds to the cart. The app does not assign SKUs. You can use a third-party app to assign them automatically. This article shows you how.

Understanding the Product Details of Custom Signs

Each generated product has these details:

• Product Creation: Our app creates a unique product each time a customer adds a custom sign to the cart.

• Tags and collections: Each new generated product has the sign-customiser-generated tag. It also has a tag that starts with sc-customiser- and ends with the Customiser ID, for example sc-customiser-1234. On most Shopify plans, the product also belongs to the Sign Customiser Products collection. It also belongs to a collection with the name of its customiser. On Shopify Starter and Retail plans, our app does not add products to these collections. Those products have both tags.

• Product type: New neon products use Custom Neon. Other new signs use Custom Acrylic Sign, Custom Metal Sign, Custom Cut-out Metal Sign, Custom Stencil, Custom Wooden Sign, Custom Aluminium Sign, Custom Braille Sign, Custom Wood Frame Sign or Custom Lightbox.

• Older products: Products that our app created before 5 August 2026 might be different. They might have no tags and no collections. They might use Custom Neon for each sign type.

• SKU: Our app does not set a SKU on these products. You can enter a SKU manually.

Adding SKUs Manually

To add a SKU to a product yourself, follow these steps:

1. Log in to your Shopify admin.

2. Go to the Products section.

3. Select the generated product. To find it, filter the product list by the sign-customiser-generated tag. If your plan supports collections, you can use the Sign Customiser Products collection. You can show the product type in the product list: click Columns, then select Product type. ​

   

4. Find the SKU field. Enter your SKU for that product. Save your changes.

   

Automating SKU Assignment

We recommend that you use a third-party app to automate SKU generation. Follow these steps:

1. Go to the Shopify App Store. Search for automatic SKU generator apps.

2. Choose an app that can set SKUs by product tag or collection. Read the app listing to check this.

3. Set the app to match the sign-customiser-generated tag. Our app adds this tag on all Shopify plans.

4. To use a collection, choose the Sign Customiser Products collection. Use a collection only if your plan supports collections.

5. To give one customiser its own SKU rule, use its sc-customiser- tag. Add the Customiser ID from the Customiser ID column in your customiser list, for example sc-customiser-1234.

Do not use only Custom Neon. This product type can also match older products of other sign types.
