Sizing - Advanced model
Last updated:
This guide explains how to configure Sizes for the Advanced Letter model. Each size has a Size Scale Multiplier. The multiplier scales the sign by a fixed factor from its base size. The base size comes from the font’s minimum letter heights.
Accessing the Sizes Settings
-
Open the Sign Customiser admin:
-
Universal admin: Go to web.signcustomiser.com and click Customisers in the sidebar.
-
Shopify admin: Open the app from your Shopify admin, then click Customisers.
-
-
Select your customiser.
-
In the customiser menu, go to Core Setup.
-
Click Sizes.
On a small screen, click Menu to show the menu.
Step 1: Create a New Size (Size Scale Multiplier)
In the Advanced Letter model, each size is defined by a Size Scale Multiplier. The sign scales in proportion to the minimum letter height of the font. The width and the height use the same scale, so the sign keeps its proportions.
Example
Assume the following font properties:
-
Minimum Height of Smallest Letter: 6 cm
-
Minimum Height of Uppercase Letter: 10 cm
Defined sizes:
-
Small - assigned multiplier: 1.0
-
Medium - assigned multiplier: 1.5
Note: You can change these two letter heights for each font. Open the font in the Edit Font form and change the fields Minimum Height of Smallest Letter and Minimum Height of Uppercase Letter. See the Fonts - Advanced Model guide for full details.
Scenario A
Customer enters “e” and selects the Medium size.
Result: 6 cm × 1.5 = 9 cm height
Scenario B:
Customer enters “B” and selects the Small size.
Result: 10 cm × 1.0 = 10 cm height
Scenario C:
Customer enters “Hello” and selects the Small size. In this example, the sign “Hello” is 8 cm tall at the base size. The next section shows how the example values give this height.
Result: 8 cm × 1.0 = 8 cm height

How the System Calculates Sign Dimensions
This example shows how the sign “Hello” can become 24 cm wide and 8 cm tall. The pixel values in this example are example values. They are not measured from a real font.
-
The system looks at each character in the sign, except spaces and some punctuation marks. It finds the character with the smallest height in pixels. In this example, that height is 28.85 px.
-
The system compares this height to the centimetre value in the font settings. “Hello” has lowercase letters, so the system uses the Minimum Height of Smallest Letter value. In this example, the value is 6 cm. Then: 28.85 px = 6 cm 1 px ≈ 0.208 cm
-
The system uses this ratio to change the pixel dimensions of the sign into centimetres. In this example, the full sign height is 38.47 px. Then: 38.47 × (6 ÷ 28.85) = 8 cm For width, the same ratio applies. In this example, the full sign width is 115.4 px. Then: 115.4 px × (6 ÷ 28.85) = 24 cm
Important
The system uses the Minimum Height of Smallest Letter value (for example, 6 cm in the example above). The exception is a sign where every letter is uppercase (for example, “HELLO”).
The system uses the Minimum Height of Uppercase Letter value (for example, 10 cm in the example above) only when every letter in the text is uppercase. Numbers, spaces and symbols do not count as letters for this rule.
Create a Size
-
In the Sizes section, click Add Size (or edit an existing size).
-
Under Size Details, enter:
-
Label – for example, Small
-
Size Scale Multiplier – for example, 1.5
-
-
Click Save.
Tip: Set your smallest size to 1.0. Then the smallest size is the original size of the sign. A multiplier below 1 is not recommended. It can give inaccurate measurements, and the admin shows a warning.
Step 2: Add a Title and Description for the Sizes Section
The title and description show to customers on the storefront.
-
While still in Sizes, scroll to Language Settings.
-
Enter:
-
Title - section heading shown to customers
-
Description (optional)
-
-
Click Save.
The Sizes page also has a Border / bleed card. In Border margin (centimetres), enter one margin. It applies to every edge of the sign, for bleed or overspray. The customer dimensions and the manufacturing dimensions include the margin.
Step 3: Enable Custom Sizing (Optional)
Custom Sizing adds a range slider that customers can use to choose their own size. By default, the preset sizes stay visible next to the custom size input. To show only the custom size, choose Only show custom size under Hide the other sizes.
You can show the custom size input only after the customer selects the custom option, or you can show it all the time. For older customisers, you can also keep the legacy Custom button while the input is always visible.
In the customer customiser, the custom size panel shows the slider, the Width and Height fields, and a padlock. Customers can move the slider or type a width or height.

Advanced customisers set the size of the sign from the customer’s text by default. When the customer sets a width or height, the sign keeps that width while the customer changes the text. The height changes to match the proportions of the text.
The padlock beside the Width and Height fields holds a manual size. The customer clicks the padlock to change between a held size and automatic width. Maximum Range sets the maximum of the slider.
-
While still in Sizes, scroll to Custom Sizing.

-
Choose one of the following:
-
Disable Custom Sizing – prevents customers from setting a custom size.
-
Enable Custom Sizing – allows customers to set a custom size for their sign.
If Enable Custom Sizing is selected, set:
-
Custom size label – the label above the custom size input. It is also the label on the legacy button, if you enable that button.
-
Maximum Range in centimetres (or inches, if your Store uses inches) – the maximum width that the slider and the Width field allow. Enter a value in this field.
-
When should the custom size input be shown? – Choose Only when the Custom option is selected, or Always show the custom size input.
-
Also show the Custom button (legacy) – this optional checkbox shows the Custom button above the input, as in the old layout. It shows only when you choose Always show the custom size input. It applies only when the preset sizes also show.
-
Hide the other sizes – Choose Show all sizes or Only show custom size.
-
-
Click Save.
Step 4: Set Sign Size Limits
You can set a maximum width and height for a sign. The Size Settings section shows only after you select Enable Custom Sizing in Step 3. To set a maximum width or height, do Step 3 first.
-
In Sizes, scroll to the Size Settings section.

-
Set Maximum Sign Width:
-
Unlimited width – no restrictions (the slider maximum still applies)
-
Width limit – set a maximum allowed width.
-
-
Set Maximum Sign Height:
-
Unlimited height – no restrictions.
-
Height limit – set a maximum allowed height.
-
-
Click Save.
Tip: Use the same value for Maximum Sign Width and Maximum Range. If the two values are different, the admin shows a warning. The sign width can give unexpected results.
If a sign is over a limit, the customer cannot continue to the next step. The customer sees the message “Size is over the limit. Contact us for a quote.”
Unless you select Disable size limit popup in General Settings (under General Style Settings), a popup also shows a Get a quote button. The button opens your custom design form or link. To change the text of the message and the button, use the Languages settings.
Step 5: Set Character Limits
-
In Sizes, scroll to the Character limits section.
-
Set the minimum number of characters required for the sign in the Minimum Text Characters input field.

-
Click Save.
Your Advanced Letter model sizes are now set up. Next, go to Pricing and Fonts.
