Let customers stack each character on its own line, lock a customiser to one orientation, or set a default orientation for languages that read top to bottom.

Last updated:

Sign Customiser supports vertical stacked text and the standard horizontal layout. You can lock a customiser to one orientation. You can also let customers switch between the two with a toggle next to the text input. For languages like Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and traditional Mongolian, you can choose how the vertical columns flow.

When vertical text is on, each typed line becomes its own top-down column. Cart, order, and export data keep the original text that the customer typed. With Simple Letter pricing, the base price follows the typed input lines. If your customiser uses Simple Letter or Advanced Letter pricing, letter charges still apply to each visible character.

How to show both horizontal and vertical options

  1. Go to the admin of Sign Customiser on your store.

  2. In the main navigation on the left, click Customisers.

  3. Click the customiser you want to edit.

  4. In the left-hand menu, go to Settings → General Settings.

  5. Scroll down to Text Orientation.

  6. Choose Show orientation options.

  7. Click Save at the bottom of the form.

Customers now see a Horizontal and Vertical toggle next to the text input. When a customer chooses Vertical, each character moves to its own line in the visualiser. The text alignment buttons are hidden while Vertical is selected.

New Address Sign Numbers customisers start with Show orientation options already chosen.

Note: On a narrow screen, such as a phone, the left-hand menu becomes a Menu button. Click it to open the same list.

How to lock the customiser to one orientation

  1. Go to the admin of Sign Customiser on your store.

  2. In the main navigation on the left, click Customisers.

  3. Click the customiser you want to edit.

  4. In the left-hand menu, go to Settings → General Settings.

  5. Scroll down to Text Orientation.

  6. Choose Horizontal only or Vertical only.

  7. Click Save at the bottom of the form.

When you lock one orientation, customers do not see the toggle. Every sign from that customiser uses the orientation you chose.

How to set the default orientation

When both orientations are available, you can choose which one the customiser opens with. Choose the orientation that most customers want.

  1. Go to the admin of Sign Customiser on your store.

  2. In the main navigation on the left, click Customisers.

  3. Click the customiser you want to edit.

  4. In the left-hand menu, go to Settings → General Settings.

  5. Scroll down to Default Text Orientation.

  6. Choose Horizontal or Vertical.

  7. Click Save at the bottom of the form.

How to choose the column direction for vertical text

When vertical text is on and customers type more than one line, each line becomes its own top-down column. The Vertical Column Direction setting controls whether the columns flow right to left or left to right.

  1. Go to the admin of Sign Customiser on your store.

  2. In the main navigation on the left, click Customisers.

  3. Click the customiser you want to edit.

  4. In the left-hand menu, go to Settings → General Settings.

  5. Scroll down to Vertical Column Direction. This setting shows only when Text Orientation is Vertical only or Show orientation options.

  6. Choose one of these options:

    • Right to left columns for Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean signs.

    • Left to right columns for traditional Mongolian signs.

  7. Click Save at the bottom of the form.

Note: Upload a font that has the glyphs your customers will type. The column direction changes only the order of the columns. It does not add language support to a font that does not have the characters.

How to rename the orientation labels

You can replace the Horizontal and Vertical labels next to the toggle with your own wording or a translation. The same labels also show in the cart and in the order, as the value of the orientation line. You can also replace the title of that line. The default title is “Orientation”. The title does not show above the toggle.

To change the orientation wording in the Review Screen settings:

  1. Go to the admin of Sign Customiser on your store.

  2. In the main navigation on the left, click Customisers.

  3. Click the customiser you want to edit.

  5. Make sure that Enable review screen is ticked.

  6. In the Chosen options section, find Text Orientation, Horizontal (Text Orientation), and Vertical (Text Orientation).

  7. Replace each field with your own wording.
