How SEO is treated for Custom Signs in WordPress
Last updated:
Sign Customiser creates a WooCommerce product for each custom sign that a customer adds to the cart. The app hides these products from your shop listings. The product page gets a “noindex” tag only while the legacy WordPress plugin is installed and active.
What the app sets on each sign product
The app makes these settings on each sign product:
-
The catalog visibility is hidden. The product does not show on your shop page, in category pages or in store search.
-
The product stays published. The product page stays at its own URL.
-
The product has the tag SignCustomiser. Use this tag to find the products in WooCommerce.
The app does not unpublish or remove the product page.
Which integration do you use?
Sign Customiser has two ways to connect WooCommerce: the API integration and the legacy WordPress plugin. To find out if you use the API integration, go to Integrate > Integrations. If the WooCommerce card shows the Enabled badge and the View Details button, you use the API integration. If the card shows the Connect WooCommerce button, you do not have an enabled API integration. The screen below shows the page with no enabled integration.

On a Universal store, if the page has no WooCommerce card, another integration is on. In that case, you do not have an enabled API integration.
API integration
The API integration is the current integration. You connect it with WooCommerce REST API keys. You do not need the Sign Customiser WordPress plugin. To set it up, read Connecting WooCommerce with Sign Customiser.
This integration hides the sign products from your listings. It does not add a “noindex” meta tag to the product pages. If the legacy plugin is also installed and active, the plugin adds the tag (see the next section). If it is not, Sign Customiser does not stop search engines from indexing these pages.
To keep these pages out of search results, set “noindex” yourself. Use the SignCustomiser tag to find the products.
Legacy WordPress plugin
You use the legacy plugin if you installed the Sign Customiser plugin from the WordPress plugins page. To change to the API integration, read Migrating from the legacy WordPress plugin.
The plugin adds a “noindex, nofollow” robots meta tag to the sign product pages while it is installed and active. This tag asks search engines not to index the page. The plugin also adds the tag to products that the API integration creates. If you uninstall the plugin, the plugin does not add the tag.
You do not need to change the catalog visibility. The app sets it when it creates the product.
