Customer designed Backboard Images

This guide shows how to let your customers upload their own images for backboards.
How to Enable User-Uploaded Backboard Images
-
Sign in to the Universal admin at web.signcustomiser.com. Or, in the Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps, click the menu icon for the Sign Customiser app, and click Open app.
-
Click Customisers in the sidebar (Universal admin) or in the app menu (Shopify admin).
-
Select the customiser you want to edit.
-
In the menu for the customiser, open Sign Components and click Backboards. On a Metal Cut-Out customiser the item is Panels. On a Braille customiser it is Plates. On a Stencil customiser it is Sheets.
-
Select an existing backboard, or click Add Backboard. On a Metal Cut-Out, Braille or Stencil customiser, the button is Add Panel, Add Plate or Add Sheet.
Note: The admin shows this option only for these backboard types: Board, Box, Stand, Cut to Shape, and Custom Shape. If you change the type of a backboard that has this option on, the upload box can still show to customers. The admin does not show the checkbox for the new type.
Note: This option is not shown for Metal Cut-Out or Stencil customisers. Their backboard type is Cut-out, which is not one of the types above.
Note: On a Shopify Store, this option needs an active subscription to a current plan. Legacy plans, such as Premier, do not include it. On Universal, a Store with no paid plan also has this option. If your plan does not include it, the checkbox is dimmed. The admin shows “This feature is only available on our latest plans.”
-
In the Customer Image Upload section, tick the checkbox Allow user to upload image for backboard. The checkbox Show image on the visualiser then appears, and it is already ticked. To hide the uploaded image in the visualiser, untick it.
The screenshot shows the same two checkboxes under an earlier heading, Backboard Image.

-
Click Save.
How It Works for Users
-
Customers choose a backboard. You can turn on the upload box for backboards of these types: Board, Box, Stand, Cut to Shape, or Custom Shape.
-
When the backboard has the upload option turned on, a box labelled Upload your own image appears.

-
Customers upload an image and adjust it to fit their design.

Changing Language/Text for Custom Backboard Option
To change the text that customers see for the custom backboard option, do these steps:
-
Open the customiser you want to edit. In the menu for the customiser, open Settings and click Languages.
-
Click Edit on the language you want to change.
-
Find the Visualiser section. To find a field quickly, use the search box above the fields. The section includes these fields:
-
Upload image text: the text in the Upload your own image box
-
Crop image modal title: the title of the crop window
-
Confirm crop button: the text on the confirm button in the crop window

The General labels section has the field Backboard image upload error. Customers see this message when a file is 2 MiB (2,097,152 bytes) or larger.
-
-
Replace the default text with your own text.
-
Click Save draft. Customers cannot see a draft.
-
Click Publish to show the text to customers. Publish is off until you save the draft. It is also off if a required label is empty or if there is nothing new to publish.

For more about languages, see Languages in Sign Customiser.
Troubleshooting & FAQ
Where can I see a demo of this?
You can see a live demo of backboard uploads here: Demo Link.
-
Go to the Backboard section and select Board.
-
Upload an image to see how it works.
What is the maximum image size allowed?
The file must be smaller than 2 MiB (2,097,152 bytes). If a customer chooses a file of 2 MiB or larger, the customiser shows the Backboard image upload error message. The default message is “Maximum upload size 2mb”.
Which image files can customers upload?
The file picker shows image files. The customiser does not check the file extension. The customer’s browser must be able to read the file. The customiser saves the cropped image as a PNG.
Why is the upload checkbox dimmed?
Your plan does not include this option. See the plan note in step 5 of “How to Enable User-Uploaded Backboard Images”.
